Women and children first.. or just the well insured?

My wife had severe swelling in her legs, hands, and feet. We took her into a walk-in clinic because we wanted to see a doctor right away with no appointment. We did not know it, but the clinic mostly served medicare patients. After an examination the clinic doc told her that she needed to see a rheumatoid specialist, but advised us that because the specialists were 'very busy' that it would likely take about a month to be admitted to one.

We stood in the administrative office of the clinic as they called the specialist to arrange a visit for us. The specialits's office knew the clinic and were apparently used to hearing them beg for care, and initially gave us an appointment in about one month. In the same phone conversation after the nurse told the specialists' office that we HAD INSURANCE, the specialists' office immediatly revised our appointment time telling us we could "come in tomorrow". I was shocked by the blatant display of denial of service to the poor. I feel really sorry for the many unfortunate people that do not have employers that have chosen to help with healthcare. Many people are getting kicked to the curb. As it turned out my wife could have had serious negative effects if we had delayed further investigation and treatment by another month.
