Why?
So...Greece a poor country, but the birth place of democracy is where this story begins. My father a U.S. cititzen was spending his summer in the country of his birth, had a heart attack, lingered for a month and died. ALL of his medical bills were covered, including being air-lifted from an island to Athens. He was buried in Greece, we paid $1500.00 out of pocket for his funeral expenses (yes it included the funeral home) and shortly after, the government reimbursed us 700 euro for his funeral expenses.
My mother, born in the U.S.A., age 57 has cancer. (Probably onset by all the stresses endured of trying to pay her bills on a single salary.) As she is only 57, she is not eligible to recieve any of my father's senior discounts on her home taxes or even receive a dollar of his social security (which he contributed to for 45 years!) She could not stay home while doing chemo or radiation because she had to work to keep her health insurance. There were battles about the coverages, time spent on the phone, more stresses...
How can such a small, poor, country take care of their people, while a large, rich, country not have an ounce of empathy for it's people that have worked hard for them?
