The unheard cost of good insurance
After breaking my hand and getting what felt like care from doctors that just did not care, I thought it best to get set up with an insurance plan. And why not ,since my hand was mis-diagnosed with just one break, when it really had 2. Now I get to live with a nice 20 degree bend in my right hand.
So my partners decide to get a small group insurance plan through Blue Cross of California. Everything is wonderful now. I have a PPO health insurance plan for me and my growing family with a very low co-pay of $20. And it has saved the life of my wife at least 2 times now, so no complaints there.
The only thing is that the monthly cost of the plan is just over $1050, which is almost twice what they say the family average is for health care. And even though they came through for my wife a few years back and covered almost $45,000 of our bills, we still owe over $15,000 that has not been covered over the years. Why do we have to fork out almost $13,000 a year and still have to live with the thought that we should not visit the doctor's regularly because of the cost that is not paid by the insurance companies?
And Dental work.... whoa, they only covered a fraction of those costs. I guess my visits to the dentist will continue on the 10 years per visit status. There is just no way a "preventive" system will work, when it requires us to visit the doctors regularly, and which most people will not do since they cannot afford even that. I don't mind paying $1050 a month if I know all my health care needs will be paid for, but it sure does hurt to make those payments and still have to try and avoid going to the doctors because I can't afford to do so.

P.S. And about those pesky lines they speak about in socialized medicine... Why is it my father had to wait over 6 months for an MRI when he had cancer? by the time he actually got that service he was in stage 4. I don't believe that our waits are any shorter than the rest of the worlds... especially when it comes to these kinds of services.
