I am 34 and the mother of four children under the age of 14. Two months ago I found a lump in my breast and went to my doctor who confirmed there was a lump there. After going to a breast surgeon and having a diagnostic mammogram, breast MRI and numerous blood test we decided the best thing for me to do was have a mastectomy.

My grandmother died of breast and ovarian cancer three weeks after being diagnosed, and her sister (my aunt) died in her 40's. My mom was diagnosed at 38 and her twin at 39. My father's sister is in her third fight with breast cancer. It was not going to kill me.

After meeting with a plastic surgeon, my surgery was scheduled for Oct 23rd, and as I was at the hospital on the 22nd for my pre-op testing my doctor called and said my insurance was refusing to pay for it. I was blown away -- a week later I received a note from them saying I didn't have enough first degree relatives with cancer... What?

Then a second letter arrived saying if I had the Braca gene they would pay. Well, I went to the hospital had the blood drawn only to find out they are now refusing to pay for that. A third letter arrived from the insurance company calling my condition pre-existing. And now they are saying I went too long in between our last insurance and this one. I honestly don't know what to do they are refusing to pay for the mammogram and MRI I had because I'm not 40 and they don't pay for them before 40. I'm sorry --  I should have told the lump to wait six more years. I'm so scared and have no one to help me.......Thank you...Joyce
