Single mom

As a single mom, I struggled to make the health insurance payments. I worked as a temp for agencies as I could not find full time work, so I had no benefits. Low wages and high premiums were so hard. I was floored when Bush vetoed health insurance for children. I couldn't believe and went to listen to his speech where he said he "did it for the kids." What was he thinking? Where are the republican women who are mothers? Perhaps there are no single mom's in the republican party.

My daughter's dad finally got health insurance through his work so he added my daughter. What a relief, until her 18th birthday. Instead of getting a happy birthday card, she got a cease and desist letter..."as of today you no longer are covered by health insurance." There was no warning. Her father pulled the rug out from her. The college which she got a full scholarship too was requiring at the same time proof of insurance in order for her to attend the coming semester. I had to scramble at the last minute robbing peter to pay paul to come up with the $500 for her insurance bill, when I only take home $1,500.

Today I still pay my own health insurance premiums at age 60. I work for a non-profit that has too few employee's to be covered by a group plan where we could get better coverage for lower premiums. My boss reimburse us for what we pay to a point, but I don't have the same good coverage that I had at my last corporate job where I got laid off. As I hear talk of inflation rising and I understand my premiums really go up between 60 and 65. I hope I can hang on. Please pass single payer health insurance. - Christy Michaels
