Share of cost = to 1 mo take home income

I have employer provided insurance for myself. However my deductible is $5000 for hospital stays and outpatient procedures. My family qualifies for medicare with a share of cost. Our share of cost is just shy of 1 month of take home pay. If it wasn't for hyperthyroidism, & asthma I wouldn't even bother with private insurance.

Unfortunately needing lab work every 3-4 months plus visits it costs more out of pocket than insurance premiums. Even with out that, share of cost is close to 2/3 what take home pay would be w/o insurance premiums. How can anybody afford that? We can barely afford to put food on our table, heaven forbid I go into thyroid crisis or have to be hospitalized for my asthma. Don't even get me started on pre-existing conditions.

When calling around to purchase insurance on my own before my employer carried insurance I was once told by an insurance agent by informing any insurance company I have asthma I may as well sign my own death warrant. Good luck finding an insurance company willing to cover it, or if they do the premiums at least double or more, with AT LEAST a 1-2 year waiting period.
