The Mentally Ill are being punished

, MO
Heathcare Status: Self-Insured

This story is about lack of insurance for those with mental illnesses. I will use the ongoing experience of one of my adult children as an example. No major insurance company will insure my adult child because of bipolar illness. When callingĀ one to ask if individual coverage can be obtained if our family would pay the premiums, the answer was, "We don't insure those with mental illnesses." So now we pay $562 per month to a State of MO plan called MO Health Insurance Pool (administered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield),which is for those who are refused health insurance. The premium will go up dramatically and a a few years my adult child's monthly bill will be near $1000. Most people know that severe illnesses that are not treated effectively only get worse. It is a published fact that there are many people in the wealthy USA who cannot be treated for lack of adequate income and/or health insurance thus creating a high demand for crisis health care that costs far more than preventive health care.
