Outrageous prices for cash payers

We are uninsured and my husband has Graves disease. He recently had an appointment with a new endocrinologist. When my husband went for his appointment he was careful to explain to everyone from the receptionist to the MD that we are on a limited income. He just needed to have a relationship with an endocrinologist to manage his disease. His visit lasted less than 15 minutes. The doctor did not examine him, he did not prescribe anything or do any labwork. The doctor did not (to my husbands knowledge) review his history. Basically they spoke for a few minutes. The bill came a couple of weeks later... $458.00.
