My daughter without health insurance
This is a story about my 20 year old daughter. Since she is not a student, she was dropped from my husband's health insurance at age 19. She was a waitress then, got in a car accident and needed to go to the emergency room. The cost was $522 for the hospital room and $172 for the doctor! Total $694. This is for someone who makes about $300 a week before taxes, maybe! She did pay $100 towards the bill, then lost her job. We applied for charity care, which thankfully they granted, but in the long run, who pays? Insurance companies or us? I am sure the costs are passed down to those covered with insurance in the way of higher monthly premiums and deductibles. Health insurance should be non-profit because everyone needs it. Taking care of yourself is not an option like buying Cable TV or going to a concert. Thank you.
