Diabetes bankrupted us
I've been a RN for almost 20 Years. My Husband is also an RN. I have Type One Diabetes . Even though we had Healthcare insurance the deductibles and copays caused us to file bankruptcy.
In 2001 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I had to work through chemotherapy and radiation treatments to cover my deductiles, copays and medicine. We came close to having our house foreclosed by the bank.
18 months ago I was diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis from a disease called sarcoidosis. Right now I am waiting for a liver transplant. I have had 54 units of blood, and been hospitalized several times for Hepatic Encephalopathy. On my last admission in 4/07. I developed pneumonia. I became confused from the swelling to my brain. And was admitted to the telemetry unit of our local hospital. My insurance company initially denied my admission. I apparently wasn't sick enough to be in the hospital with electrolyte imbalance, pneumonia, a low low blood count that required a transfusion of 2 units of blood, and an ammonnia level that was excedingly high.
I am receiving Social Security Disability. It took 6 months to get the money I paid into it over the last 30 years. I had to get my congressman to help. I have taken care of other people's parents and often wonder who will take care of me. I can't get life insurance because of pre-existing conditions. If I should die before I get a transplant, My husband can't even afford to bury me. All the extra money goes to copays, deductibles and medications. Needless to say I'm only 49 years old.
