Struggling college student gets hit with $1,000 ER bill for minimal medical intervention

Lansing, MI
Heathcare Status: Uninsured

I am a college student . A couple of months later I had noticed a bump on my vagina. I freaked out and called my boyfriend hysterically. I was a virgin and had no reason to have a bump. He took me to the hospital since no other options were available for a few days. Knowing that this would bother me until I was able to be examined I agreed to go. When we got to the hospital we filled out paper work and sat there for most of the two hours we were there. I had a doctor take me in a room to examine me and she said that she could not see a thing. I pointed out the bump and she explained that it looked like a hair follicle. I sighed in relief and took her advice that I did not need a full examination or treatment. I thanked her and walked out elated.

A couple of weeks later I received two bills. The first being for $738.00 and the other being $209.00. I called the hospital wondering what I was being charged for. I was barely seen for five minutes and there were posters hanging up that claimed everyone had a right to be seen even if they are not treated. I could not believe what was happening. I was referred to another number which said they would review the case but that did not help any. Here I am a struggling college student trying to make it in the world and I get hit with this. For being barely examined for five minutes I do not believe I should have to pay $947. Where is the sense in that?!
