Living a Nightmare
My children and husband have no healthcare insurance, and I live in fear that one of them will get sick or injured because we are poor and cannot afford health care. I became disabled a few years ago, and had to wait two years before getting Medicare, paying $600+ per month for medications. This destroyed my family financially, as we could not pay other bills and eat with this burden.
We got State subsidized insurance for six months, but then they kicked us off their plan when they learned my husband could get insurance from his employer. The problem was that my husband's employer did NOT tell him he could get family coverage, only individual coverage - which incidentally was extremely poor coverage: no sickness or surgery or hospitalization, only prevention and $200 per month for medications.
Now the State is claiming he could have gotten family coverage 6 months sooner (he could not!) and trying to make us pay the full $6000 in family coverage premiums for the time we were covered. Is this evil or what! Now I have good coverage for my medications from Medicare, but I cannot get the surgery I need to get out of my wheelchair because I cannot afford to pay the 20% co-pay (probably $10,000+ for the total replacement of my knee). I could work and be productive again if we had a system like Canada or England or France or Norway or any of several countries in the world. But because I am American, I have to continue to suffer.
