Learning about Diabetes the Hard Way
I am a law student who is trying to finish her legal studies. While trying to work full time and go to night school, I found out that an injury I received while exercising and maintaining my diabetes caused more damage than first diagnosed. I started dealing with L.A. County Health in October of 2006 and was finally able to see a doctor who specializes in Type 1 Diabetes after waiting 3 years! In the meantime, I've developed diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia along with my blood sugars getting totally out of control. I have been unable to work, study and maintain my health. I am 38 years old and can't even move around as well as my 90 year old neighbor! While dealing with county health, I have witnessed and have been a part of intentional/negligent health care. It's one thing to not be heard and believed, but it's another thing when you have a county health worker say you're shit out of luck because there is only 6 doctors for over 5,000 patients. Bottom line - I am a diabetic who should have her blood sugar checked every time she visits a clinic. I have several incidents and recommendations from a diabetic patient's point of view as well as first hand knowledge of filing a complaint and not being heard about her health treatments. I believe California can set a precedent in providing Universal Health Care as well as set up Co-ops with third party agencies like the pharmaceutical and medical supply industries. It's time to provide Americans with healthcare to at least help them maintain and lead a happy, productive life. I know that once I become 'disabled', my health care road will not be any easier until we get Universal Health Care, but seeing Americans stand up for their rights only keeps my spirit going!
