Job ended, lost health benefits, health worsened without treatment

Several years ago I was a graduate student trying to finish a PhD in education. I had a good student health plan that covered regular doctor's visits. During one of these my doctor discovered that I had fibroids. She kept an eye on them and I finally graduated.

While looking for a job with health benefits (my first post-grad position had none) I kept my health care through a COBRA until I missed a payment when the offices moved, and lost my health coverage. I was rejected for health insurance due to my fibroids, which continued to get larger without treatment.

It took a couple of years to get work with health benefits and by that time my fibroids had become so large that they were untreatable by any non-surgical means, such as UAE. This summer I had to undergo surgical removal of most of my uterus to get rid of the fibroids, a surgery that could have been avoided if I had had healthcare.
