Healthcare nirvana
My wife and I own a small restaurant and we have been in business now for almost seven years. We are not afraid of hard work and on average we spend approximately 70 hours/week each at our restaurant. You know… work hard, work for yourself and experience the American Dream.
Oh, the American Dream… so much has changed! When we first purchased our business we also purchased health insurance for a reasonable sum of just less than $300.00 per month. In order to keep the cost manageable, we opted for a high deductible of $2500.00. At the time it didn’t seem like such a big deal as neither of us had any significant health issues we were dealing with.
So much can change in a short period time… fast forward five years. We now have ongoing health issues and we now have no insurance. Within five years we saw our health insurance premium increase to $825.00 per month… a whopping 276%. Well of course in order for my wife and I to continue to “live” the American Dream something had to give. To survive financially the only recourse we had was the forfeiture of our health insurance policy.
My wife and I… we just keep plugging away. Nowadays however, we just keep pretending to ourselves that somehow, someway our medical maladies will not rise up and destroy what little bit we are able to enjoy and experience of our slice of the American Dream. So here we stand… one foot in reality and the other placed firmly in never-never land! Healthcare nirvana!
