Get up and do something

Heathcare Status: Uninsured

I was downsized from my company and unable to make the Cobra payments to continue healthcare coverage. I did not realize that my inherited diabetes resulting in artery disease would prevent me from buying health insurance. While searching for a job I had to have quadurple by-pass surgery. The result was filing bankrupcy to wipe out the medical debt.

During this time my medical treatment ended when I left the hospital. I sat on the side of my bathtub draining infections from the surgery. I lapsed into a deep untreated depression for the next two years. Then I had chest pains again I entered an emergency room where the treating physician confirmed I was having a heart attack. I was transported to a regional hospital for treatment via ambulance. The next morning I was given a stress test. The treating physician was talking to me before I started the stress test. In this conversation I told him that I was uninsured and worried about the expense. There was no reply and the test started. As soon as I stepped on the tread mill the doctor left the room returning a short time later. Upon entering he looked at the test strip and annouced I was OK telling the technicain to treminate the test. I was not even on the tread mill long enough to increase my breathing rate.

Later I was sued for not paying a bill that I was unable to pay since I was unemployed. I am tried to work out some sort of settlement with the hospital only to be told they did not make settlements, and that I should go to court. Further if I did not go to court they, the hospital, would throw me in jail. I have decided to fight back in the only way I know how. I took early retirement with social security and enrolled in college to become a nurse. I still have no insurance but at least eventually I may be able to help other persons caught in the same web. I plan on working in a free clinic.

What an unspeakable tragedy . . .

this should not be happening in the richest country on the planet.

Affordable healthcare is a right the rest of the civilized world takes for granted. What crime did we Americans commit to live in a country that allows people to lose everything because they had the misfortune to get sick?
