Dying and denied medicaid due to $57.50 in child support a week
July 2009 To whom it may concern, I am writing this in hopes that something can be done for my sister, Gaylene Suiter, before it is to late. She is 49 years old and has two children--a 16 year old daughter and a 23 year old son. Gaylene has been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis which mimics pancreatic cancer. When this illness began, Gaylene weighed 167 lbs and now she weighs less than 100 lbs. She is in constant excruciating pain and has been unable to work for the last 8 months.
Eating food causes the pain to worsen and causes vomiting and constant diarrhea. I have watched her get worse day by day. Gaylene is so weak she cannot do anything but lay in the bed and is now getting bed sores. Gaylene has no insurance and has filed for Medicaid but was denied this benefit because she receives $57.50 a week in child support. Every test that the hospitals does on her, she has to pay hundreds of dollars down before they would even do the testing. Gaylene had 4 or 5 upper GI tests and had to pay $600 down before each test. Each time they replace the stint in her pancreas she has to come up with more money down which is every 3 months. I am not even sure how much she has paid on the many MRI ‘s they have done.
We had a benefit garage sale for her at Pretty Paws and raised over $3000.00 for the first initial tests. If it not been for the wonderful financial donations from our family ,friends and all our customers at Pretty Paws Boutique where Gaylene was the manager for 15 years, I don’t know what we would have done. She has been in and out of the hospital numerous times. Each time they release her after a short stay because she has no insurance and of course no Medicaid. A doctor at Baylor recently did testing that showed this illness is due to a genetic deformity. The doctor said she really needed to see a surgeon, but he said no one would touch her without insurance. Gaylene has no money.
If it were not for me and our mother (who is on Social Security), Gaylene would be homeless and on the streets. I filed for disability benefits for her three months ago and we have not received an answer. I am afraid by the time we here from them it will be too late. We are watching my beautiful sister slowly die and wither away of starvation and pain day and night because she has no insurance or Medicaid! How in the world can our government deny her help when she has worked and paid taxes all her adult life? I am begging for help from someone.
Please for the love of God, someone help her.
Sincerely yours,
Rhonda
