Concussion takes First Dean's list Scholarship Recipient to the door of a Health Care Nightmare

Our bright and active Deans List /Scholarship recipient daughter had an accident. She wore her helmet, had reflectors, wasn't drinking or drugging, etc. It was an accident involving loss of control of her bike. She suffers a severe concussion, plus fractured facial bones and abrasions and bruises. My employer health coverage only covers our 21 year old IF SHE IS FULLY matriculated. The Drs. are suggesting she not do school for 6 weeks. Brain trauma requires rest, rest, rest. If she needs a medical leave, she gets dropped from my family plan. If she pushes herself to stay matriculated she could potentially harm herself/her brain/risk losing her scholarship by not getting A's. When she had the accident I said "thank God she was wearing her helmet. Thank God we have health insurance." But now she needs medical care and needing it may position her so she will lose her coverage. Definitely, this system is broken.

The night of the accident we were lucky enough to be able to drive to the ER in a distant town to be with her. After 2 hours in the ER, she was still waiting for a CT scan, all her wounds were still caked with dirt and blood, she was still vomiting from the concussion, and no one had given her an ice pack for the swelling. Two minutes after our arrival, I got an ice pack. An hour later, we saw the Dr. who did not know she had been vomiting. Around hour 5 she got the CT scan and at hour 6.5 we were out of there.
