Cancer patient with low blood pressure sent home at 1 am from ER told to drink more.
My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Nov 07 after whipple surgery didn't work. Two stories about his care were very disturbing.
1. his visiting nurse suggested he get help after finding low blood pressure 90/40 and overall demeanor was not good. They called an ambulance and was taken to Chandler Regional Hosp. After 8 hours of many tests and NO food or water he was released at 1 am and sent home by a cab. They suggested he drink more fluids. They didn't even try to give him intravenous hydration. At this time he was only able to tolerate 3-4 Ensures a day and was concentrating on nutrition rather than water. Since then his cancer DR. has given him intravenous hydration.
The second story happened the other day. After 4 days of severe constipation and pain he drove himself to a facility, not sure if it was a clinic or an ER. After their testing they suggested he go home and take some home remedies to alleviate the problem, because they don't give enemas there. The next day after taking several laxatives he had a severe diarrhea accident all over a chair and carpeting. Is this a dignified style of health care?
By the way he has Blue Cross and Medicare ins, so he's not indigent. I was so moved by your cause I saw on Bill Moyers I just had to write and applaud your efforts. Let's get rid of the middleman and mimic other countries' health care systems, THAT WORK.
