55 year old dropped after developing serious neurologic condition
Name changed on patient to protect identity. He is my brother. June 2006. brought to hospital suffering from dizzyness. dx with low sodium or hyponitremia. given iv infusion too fast. now has cpm and unable to move, toilet etc. He needs 24 hr complete nursing care. His mental functions are normal so he knows what is happening. Prior to this accident he was a normal hard working man.
When insurance found that he had a serious neurologic problem he was dropped, considered a custodial case. He was sent to a nursing home. no rehab for a 55 year old man. I went to the State he is in and fought for physical therapy. It was instigated in March 2007 but now has stopped (probably because the advocate had to go home to her own family) He was allowed to develop foot drop and hammer toes in the months preceeding physical therapy.
This is a horror show and is typical of insurance companies in this country. The nursing home says he was non-compliant with physical therapy when he was begging for it. The real reason was that the pay source, medicaid, took 6 months to fill the gap. There is a legal case pending on this matter, so I can not divulge name, city or state.
