26 with broken ankle and denied medical care
I broke my ankle exactly 1 week ago. Instead of going to the ER I went to an urgent care facility (Med 7) and paid the $105 to be seen by a doctor. While filling out my paperwork I noticed that I would have to pay $105 to be seen by doctor and my 'remaining bill' would have to be paid upon leaving. I got xrays and was told my ankle has an incredibly bizarre break that the doctor has never seen and didnt know about. I was put in a splint and told to follow up with an orthopedic doctor immediately. The remaining bill from the urgent care facility was incredibly high and I tried to make arrangements to pay payments...which they said was fine...but they were going to hold on to my prescription for the pain meds (yes for my BROKEN) ankle until I paid them the ENTIRE balance. Needless to say I left there with a severely sprained and broken ankle with nothing to manage my pain.
I made an appointment and had the urgent care facility send my xrays to the orthopedic doctor. The doctor also said that my break was incredibly unusual and he said I would be called to have an mri and add'l xrays scheduled. I called to follow up and was told they cannot see me until I provide proof of insurance...which I dont have. They will not see me and are refusing care. I don't know what to do. The orthopedic doctor told me my xrays weren't sufficient and I may have torn tendons and more fractures than my xrays showed. Now I sit here 1 week after breaking my ankle with a walking cast and the possibility of having more breaks than I'm aware of.
I'm stuck and I don't know what to do. The ER will tell me to schedule an appt with a orthopedic...and orthopedic's won't see me. I'm 26 and afraid my ankle won't heal properly and that I will have problems forever. FYI - I am self employed and have ALWAYS had insurance until starting my own company. I am within the 1st year and an unable at this time to afford the cost of individual insurance.
