Your Vote Can Help Women with Cancer Get Treatment when Health Insurance Says "No!'

The Saralee and Carol Foundation, a new nonprofit dedicated to helping women with cancer get treatment when health insurance delays or denies it, is in the running for a $50,000 grant in the Pepsi Refresh program - but needs your vote to win!

I started the Saralee and Carol Foundation in honor of my mother and my best friend's mother, both of whom died of cancer in 2006.  They both fought long, hard battles - not only against the disease, but also against their health insurance companies.  In the name of profit, the insurers repeatedly delayed or denied care.  In my mother's case, a delay in care caused by her health insurance company directly led to the complication that took her life.

No one should lose a loved one because a for-profit health insurance company blocks access to life-saving care.  And no one should have to choose between getting the medical care they need and paying rent or feeding their family.

Half of the nation's bankruptcies are due at least in part to medical debt, and three quarters of those bankrupt people had insurance when they got sick.  The new health care laws may require insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions, but they do not stop them from charging exorbitant premiums and they do not require them to cover medical care.  As long as health insurance is a for-profit industry, these companies will be responsible to their shareholders, not their policyholders.  And it is simply more cost-effective to let you die than it is to help you live.

Until the system changes, I believe that we need to help each other.  That is why I started the Saralee and Carol Foundation, and that is why I am asking for your help now.

Thirty seconds of your time could save a life.  Please vote for the Saralee and Carol Foundation, once a day, every day, during the month of August.  Tell your friends, post on Facebook, tweet about us...help us get the word out there.  Because it is all about the votes.
