Single-Payer Snippets
The big news in the movement for single-payer healthcare is that they’re busy putting lipstick on the pig…by which I mean that the California legislature, in the aftermath of Arnold's failed plan, is looking on improving the health insurance corporations’ behavior and products. Let’s turn to our healthcare hero:
"In the aggregate, it could be pretty significant," said Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica), chairwoman of the Senate Health Committee, of the legislation. "I think it's just getting to the point where the opposition has just overreached so badly and the insurance companies' actions have been so egregious that both sides of the aisle are getting fed up with them."

Speaking of Governor Arnold, since he pushed the bad healthcare reform bill, on behalf of the insurance corporations, Californians have turned on him. Lame duck now is session.

Reality Check
Is this a forum for nurses or a liberal political blog? There is no such thing as free healthcare. Somebody has to pay. Somehow, people have gotten the idea that the Federal Government has this never-ending pile of money that they can just give away. That's my money and your money that is deducted from our paychecks each month. I'm a nurse but can't afford to provide my services for free. Everyone has the opportunity to donate all the money they want to any organization of their choosing, and I applaud those who can give more than I can. I have to earn a living also. Who is going to pay me for caring for the ill or injured patient, the homeless, the unemployed, the poor? No poor person has ever given me a job. I have read a lot of the comments on this site and wonder if the nurses that have written here are providing their services free of charge, if not who is paying your salary. Probably the for-profit companies(hospitals, insurance companies)that you are complaining about. I am not trying to be sarcastic, just trying to get you to stop politicizing an issue that everyone cares about. I believe that healthcare is an important issue. Despite implied meanings of the comments posted here, Republicans don't want our children, elderly, or the poor to starve or be denied needed medical care. I haven't seen any of these comments address issues such as the outrageous lawsuits that increase the cost of medical coverage while lining the pockets of the lawyers. It sounds like the members of this organization have gotten their rhetoric straight from the Democratic Party talking points. I will not join any nursing organization whose leadership is merely promoting a political agenda and suggest that nurses look closely at the organizations they support.
