Dick Cheney Would Probably Be Dead W/o Government-Financed Healthcaer
One more irony about the healthcare crisis: the politicians in charge of fixing it…are guaranteed healthcare through a system that is not just “single-payer” (in terms of being financed by the government instead of insurance companies), but beyond is actually government-run.
Nurses are running ads today in 10 Iowa newspapers pointing out that this means that Dick Cheney, with his heart trouble, would probably be dead now if he were an ordinary American forced to search for cardiac care in a thicket of mercenary insurers and heartless HMOs. Cheney gets guaranteed healthcare; we get squat.
We’ll take a look below, also at some recent highlights from the healthcare movement…

Vice President Dick Cheney would “probably be dead by now” if not for his federally funded health care, according to an eye-catching ad calling for universal health care that will run Monday in ten Iowa newspapers. The ad is union-funded by the California Nurses Association and its national arm, the National Nurses Organizing Committee, which represents 75,000 nurses.
You know you’ve succeeded when this happens:
The vice president’s office said the ad isn’t worth more than a no comment. “Something this outrageous does not warrant a response,” said Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for Cheney.
Among the good news this time, is that the American College of Physicians is calling for an examination of how a single-payer system would work in the U.S. This is a great move forward for one of the nation’s premier organizations of Doctors.
While health-care reform may play second fiddle to the war in Iraq among voters this election season, it appears that the domestic issue is taking on new life thanks to medical-industry professionals….Welcome to the 2008 elections, where medical professionals are turning up the heat in favor of a universal, single-payer system that represents a radical departure from what most of the major presidential candidates are proposing. They know that such a system is a long shot at this point, but the numbers in their camp are growing.
Elsewhere in the drive for guaranteed healthcare…
…I’m not sure who Brad Warthen is--he blogs for The State newspaper in South Carolina—but he’s become one of the most eloquent voices in support of genuine healthcare reform.
…The Charleston (West Virginia) Gazette continues its impassioned stumping for single-payer…
We are building a grand coalition. Meanwhile, who really likes the insurance corporations except for the politicians whose pockets they line (to let them win office, and guaranteed healthcare).

National Healthcare
Nurses Rock. Keep up the great work.
Dick Cheney Ad
Reguardless of if he gets better health care or not, the man is Vice-President and deserves some respect. I don't agree with the Bush Administration on anything, but I still think that these types of ad's have no place in the media.
There has to be some better way of bringing the health care crisis to the fore front with out bashing Dick Cheney or any other person.
Dar
Cheney
Cheney deserves a war crimes trial overseas and a treason trial here.
That is what he deserves.
the health care ad referring to Cheney
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way for our politicians to notice or care about the lack and expense of a normal citizen's health care in this country. I don't see that the ad was particularly derogatory to Cheney at all. It simple spoke the truth. And it was spoken by professionals who see it very clearly.
Your taxes as well as mine
Your taxes as well as mine are paying for his "healthcare". If it is good enough for the Congress, it should be gooe enough for the rest of us. Remember, we pay their salaries, we elect them to represent us, we consider our reps to be our voice in the government. If this is not true, then why do we "coddle" our representatives with better options in healthcare and a pension for life for "serving" us.
Dick Cheney Ad
Dar, I don't understand how this ad bashes anyone. It states a fact: if an uninsured American or even an American with the level of insurance a typical working American receives (and many receive none) were to have Dick Cheney's health condition, they would be dead by now. The reasoning is simple: any vice-president of the United States, any member of Congress (as Cheney was) receives top-notch health care, unavailable to most Americans due to expense.
There is nothing bashing Cheney, unless you consider pointing out the fact that he has had four heart attacks "bashing", which would only be suggested by the most intellectually dishonest right-wing apologist for Cheney. Since you claim not to agree with the Bush administration on anything, I'll assume you are not a right-wing apologist for Cheney.
Health care
I live in Canada and when my 69 year old dad needed triple bypass he was under the knife 2 days later. It sounds like a third world country down there with your lack of health care. The haves and have nots. 47 million without health care? There are only 39 million people living in Canada. Even though you are all tax payers? Its obvious to me the people of the USA need to remove this government now. They don't know how to manage your money and to provide for you. There is no time to wait to save a life. The only other thing I can say about this is, even the bastards in charge in this world no matter how rich and powerful they think they are won't live forever. NOBODY GETS TO STAY.
Dick Cheney
Dick Cheney deserves nothing special. He is a snake oil salesman, at best, just like his boss. They should be impeached and then charged and prosecuted. Anyone that can't see that is free to leave the country at the earliest possible moment. Unfortunately, it is those people who will once again vote for the wrong people out of some misguided loyalty (or worse yet, ignorance - then we will have the same mess again after the next election.
Cheney
Most of us don't have a Blackhawk helcopter and MD team travel with us as protection against health problems either. I think Cheney has gone over his $3 million insurance limit.
Considering his health problems should he even be in such a high position endangering our country? His mental state fragile. Other "employees" would have lost their job. Yes...and probably dead.
The Health Care Scam
I'll try this again, perhaps the third try is the charm.
All the advanced countries of the world do health care differently from the US. They do it universally at half the cost. The health care fiasco of the US is quite easily explained. It is simply another method by which the national wealth is redistributed to the nobility, very much like the outrageous expenditures to the military industrial complex. Let us hope that all of this corruption can be ended without the approach that was taken in eighteenth century France.
To whom this may concern
If you are so unhappy with our government....why dont you leave? For you to refer to Vice President as a snake oil salesmen is rude and disrespectful. I feel that the President and his cabinet have done their job to the best of their ability. I know that any other President would be in the same boat, and you would be unhappy regardless of who was in office because its been a rough 8 years and it wouldnt have mattered who was in office, the outcome would be the same or even worst. You cannot seriously believe that Al Gore or Kerry could have done a better job. If you were put in the same positions the President has been in, I think that you would know. See, I bet that you have no real knowledge of what the President has done. I think that you are so caught up in the media and mistakes Bush has made, that you failed to realize that Bush has protected your freedom for the last 8 years. My parents, friends, and family have been protecting your freedom by fighting in this war! You need to be thankful for Bush and his decisions because without them, you probably wouldnt have been able to write that comment in the first place! You call those who voted for Bush ignorant when your comment was one of the most insolent things I have read. You have no class and to say that everyone who doesnt agree with you should leave the country is absolutely rediculous. Think and research before you make another comment. It is people like you that are tearing this country a part. Ungrateful, ignorant people like you.
America need Edwards for Change
I'm without medical insurance. I can't afford to see a doctor, I couldn't go to most doctors even if I had the cash since many of the Doctors I've called said, no insurance, we won't see you. I have pre existing medical conditions that deem me uninsurable. Though I've had pain that is horrible, though I work, I still am unable to get screenings that other 50 year old women with Health Insurance are able to. I feel I'm living on borrowed time and that my only hope is that John Edwards gets elected so that maybe I'll have a chance to take care of my health needs. I'm not sitting on my butt and waiting for a handout but I am one of the working poor in America that has no chance to get health insurance under the current situation.
National Healthcare
You people are complete fools. It is stunning that so many professional and industry people believe that money grows on trees. Nobody could afford to pay for the level of coverage described in this ad?
http://www.theindustryradar.com/Home/?currentHome=/Accounts/article/layo...
There certainly is a problem, but you are kidding yourself if you think that silver bullet is socialized/government run healthcare.
socialzed healthcare
Thanks for pointing out how retarded the campaign for "universal insurance" is. It's unaffordable.
A few points:
- Spell "healthcare" correctly. Please.
- As a nurse, I see the poorest of poor getting taken care of all the time. We care for the crackheads and the bums, the alcoholics and the general leeches of society, all on the dollar of the taxpayer. They don't get turned away at the door. If anything, its the lower tiers of the middle class who suffer the most. And even if we wanted to ensure everyone, the system can't afford to carry every single person in the US.
- To the Canadian who thinks this is the 3rd world, I'm pretty sure your system sucks, buddy. The ONLY country where socialized healthcare works at all is Finland, with 5 million people, not 300 million. Even there, you wait months for a MRI scan, compared to hours or days in the US. And what contribution to research has Canada given to healthcare? What's that....nothing? Yeah. So even if the idiot Moore is your favorite cheerleader these days, that doesn't mean his message isn't massively slanted, pretty much to the point of being....wrong.
- If you truly want to make healthcare affordable, stop traching and pegging 95 year olds (i.e. treating people until they are so stiff from rigor mortis you can't do anything else) and put a cap on class action suits against doctors. Oh yeah, who's calling for socialized medicine? Democrats. And who funds Democrats? Lawyers.
- And to this union: stop being so petty to stoop to the Bush-bunch-bashing that defines the democratic rhetoric today. You're healthcare professionals, come up with some real solutions. Too bad you're too busy politicking for your favorite dem prez candidate.
Universal Health Care
So what you're saying about our health care is its failing the people because we're trying to keep the elderly alive unnecessarily? So at what age do we let them just die? Who decides that? You? Is it wrong to try to keep the handicapped alive or maybe you feel that's a waste too? Heck, perhaps we can just choose by income, oh yeah, that's pretty much what we do anyway. If you're destitute you can get care, if you're rich you can get care but God forbid if you work and try to get by then you can rot before you'll get any type of healthcare for free. Birth control, pap tests, mammograms? Forget it, they aren't cheap for the working poor and sure the heck aren't free. Canada can't be all bad, they aren't 47th in healthcare like the good Ole USA. There is no reason we can't be great and provide for our people and John Edwards has a doable plan.
you
are u sure u r not one of bush or cheneys kids. u r as a professional person a classic example of what is wrong with this country and the system we have which only works for the select few, in other words ur a neocon or an idiot!!
thank you for ad
What a brilliant plain speaking ad. Thank you, thank you. Maybe there is hope.
Ad is correct!
I am very grateful to see so many nurses and doctors demanding an end to our healthcare you can afford system. Interestingly, I'd made the comment regarding Cheny and Healthcare last time he was hosptialized. It's outragoues that he and other neo=cons take with both hands while denying basic care to millions of people.
Want to see a doctor? Hop a plane to Iraq. Iraqi citizens are being treated free of charge and guess who's paying for it. WE ARE!!! Haven't we had enough.
I'm also appalled at self-styled Christian leaders who are against healthcare reform and single payer. Wasn't Jesus first and foremost a healer?
Don't mean to ramble. Just I've been an advocate of universal healthcare for almost 3 decades. It wonderful to finally see this issue get the attention it deserves.
Huh?
I can't take this site to seriously when they can't even get the spelling correct in the headline. That is very unprofessional.
Pot, meet kettle.
Pot, meet kettle.
Content of Ad
Apparently you cannot spell, either and we should not take your comments "too" seriously.
Healthcare
I agree with the nurses ads. We have a bunch of hippocties in the White House and Congress. They should all do without for a while to get the real taste of no health insurance and the choices that have to be made. Basic coverage for all to start at least.
Health savings plans are just another tax break for those who have. I had one for a while, but $5,00 out-of-pocket before they cover anything. Get real! I am a physical therapist and I know universal coverage would probably cut my reinbursement, but I could be helping more people and making a bigger difference. Let's do it. The congress needs to get real campaign reform enacted and the rest would fall in line. Few politicians could be bought and sold.
Dick Heartless Cheney
Damn right, Nurses…not only does the Dick gets full medical care for the rest of his life (talk about Socialized Medicine - gasp!!) but so do all the Senators and Congressmen/women - Republican and Democrat. So when your nearest and dearest government representative fearmongers about the dangers of universal coverage, remind them that what's good for the goose ought to be good for the gander as well. The american people get lies and lipitor - government officials get full coverage that WE THE TAX PAYERS give them. Merry Christmas, suckers!
Mirror, Mirror...
With all that has been said, we are still not answering the questions that should have been asked. What is real about this country anymore, is it even recognizable to our great-grandparents? Who are we in the world? As dubyuh has become irrelevant he has succeeded in rendering this country thus as well. Our congress are a bunch of do-nothings that WE elected. It is my fault and yours. The "discussions" and "debates" and polls that pass for mandates and watch-words for our representatives are as tinkling brass with only the prospect of knowing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. We need to grow up, again, and throw the rascals out!
"Mirror, mirror..."
Don't blame Congress for the government's failure to take action on healthcare. Without a greater Democratic majority, it's impossible to stop a Republican filibuster or override Bush's vetoes.
Details? Why no details?
I like the ad. Yay to the Nurses. Boo to the proofreader! :)
BUT, why doesn't A-N-Y-O-N-E talk about:
Lifetime maximums;
Pre-existing conditions and what THOSE patients must pay for their first year of coverage;
What patients with pre-existing conditions are forced to pay for their second year of coverage because those rates are calculated on risk, which is derived from forcing the patient to submit bills on their pre-existing condition for the prior year for "bookkeeping" purposes;
Cost Sharing;
Rigorous screening companies experience with Insurance Carriers: if your ratio of premiums to claims reaches a certain point (70/30 is what I've seen), the company's - and thus the employees' - rates go up;
That insurance carriers cut benefits constantly - check your policies, people! Most policies no longer pay for skate board injuries, bicycle injuries, or lots of other "sports-related" injuries. Basically, if you "deliberately" hurt yourself, those injuries can be excluded from coverage.
WHY doesn't anyone talk about the specifics?
For almost 15 years, I have been the person responsible for obtaining company insurance policies and explaining those policies to our employees. We must go to socialized medicine: the only people making money are the insurance carriers and the doctors themselves. Look up "Cost Sharing." I dare you.
I've suffered for the past 25 years from a condition that requires surgery every 3-5 years. I know how difficult it is for the average person to deal with a pre-existing condition and insurance carriers. A sensible person with a long-term condition keeps the same physician: my employer changing health plans to HMOs and/or PPOs has made that IMPOSSIBLE. Thus, my health has suffered and the condition's been made worse over the years from inconsistent care. Every doc seems to "know better" than the last one... It's illogical and just costs almost everyone more money, including the insurance industry. The only ones profiting are the medical providers.
It is utterly reprehensible to profit off of another person's misery. It's that darned simple. Look at the UK - they manage medical breakthroughs yet they have socialized medicine. We are being fed lies by the profiteers.
The US public needs to be given the specifics about health care. "Sound bytes" and ads are terrific, but they don't offer enough information.
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS!
LOL lern 2 spel stoopid
I would like to thank the astute commenters who have brought attention to the egregious grammatical deficit in the headline of this post.
I am afraid I cannot support a national healthcare system because the word "healthcare" has been misspelled here.
It is well-known that serious scholars of health policy do not make typographical errors.
Perhaps if you correct the spelling then I may be persuaded to examine your proposal.
Enough about the spelling mistake already
JN says "egregious grammatical deficit"... please, your arrogance is nauseating. I've worked around doctors for 16 years installing computerized medical records systems and I can tell you that the statement "It is well-known that serious scholars of health policy do not make typographical errors." is very incorrect. EVERYONE makes occasional spelling errors and if you think they are substance enough to influence a country's health care policies, then you're just an annoying fool with really good spelling skills. Are we gonna have to pass a spelling test before receiving healthcare? How about the fact that many doctors have illegible handwriting on prescriptions and lab reqs. Does that make them unqualified to do their job? Um, no!
Spelling mistakes
may by typing ones. I make them all the time. The message and concern is what is important.
Hunting for health care in America...with Dick Cheney!
Oops, do we say one thing and behave differently in this country, with liberty and justice for all? Bang...gottcha! Was it a bird, was it a Plame? No, just a heart attack.
While market theorists would argue that competition for profit lowers costs and optimizes care, the evidence proves that dog won't hunt. Some aspects of life are too precious to trust to the market; for instance, public services for the public good: clean water, wholesome food, police and fire protection, waste disposal services, educational opportunity, and HEALTH CARE.
Wouldn't it be great if we had a freedom of choice act (FOCA) for health care? Free to choose any doctor, any hospital, any clinic, and receive the medicine and necessary treatment prescribed by a doctor or nurse practitioner? The right to make health care decisions free of interference by insurance companies, drug companies, and HMOs?
What about freedom to change jobs, go back to school, move to another city or a different state without worrying about losing our 'coverage'? The freedom to go to the nearest hospital or doctor's office and hear the words, "What can we do to help you?" instead of, "Show us your insurance card?" or, "Dr. Smith isn't on your list of providers!" or, "That's not covered, you haven't paid your deductible, that's a pre-existing condition, copay is due at the time of service."
What right do insurance companies have to restrict our freedom of choice in health care? The right to make a profit, at the expense of sick people is un-American.
As nurses, the public trusts us and our patients ask us, what can we do? We must start by telling them to hold our politicians accountable by bird-dogging them and flushing them out of the thickets; make phone calls, write letters, and demand their support for a national health plan like HR 676.
If government financed health services are good enough for Mr. Cheney, then they're good enough for all of us, cradle to grave!
Spelling
More of your typical neocon %&*^. Let's turn their heads away from the problem at hand, and get them all at each others throats about the spelling.
boy those washington people
boy those washington people got it made. they live high on the hog and condemn us for what we ahve to do to get what we need. we need to trade places even for one day and see what we could do with all <
